You've done the work. You've read the books. You've felt the divine self you are. And then the old junk surfaces again and you know what to do and you do not do it — because he is screaming too loudly for the Wise One to get through. This is for seekers ready to catch the one word that gives the whole game away.
You have done the work. You have read Singer and Tolle and Katie and Williamson. You have studied A Course in Miracles. You have sat on the cushion for years. You have felt — really felt — who you are underneath the noise. The divine self is not a concept to you. She is an experience you have tasted and returned to and tasted again.
And then the old junk surfaces. An ambush from an old memory, a charge from a current relationship, an emotion you thought you had already released for good. Something in you explodes — inside, where no one can see — and you watch yourself, in real time, know exactly what to do and somehow not do it.
Later, in the calm, you understand what happened. You could even explain it to someone else going through it. But in the moment — when it actually mattered — the Wise One you have genuinely felt many times would not come on command. You could not reach her. She could not reach you. Something was in the way.
That something has a name. It is the part of you that was watching all of this and thinking, I should have this figured out by now. I should not still be triggered by this. I should be further along. If this old junk would just stop surfacing, I would be fine. Perfect, even. Divine, in fact.
That is the script. Listen for the word should — that is how it gives itself away. How I should be. How they should be. How this should have gone by now. Every time it runs, it arrives dressed as sincere seeking. And every time, it closes the very door it is trying to walk through.
Sir EgoYour ego. The hero with the wrong map. is not the problem on the awakening path. He has been the hero of this whole adventure. He is the one who read the books, found the teachers, drove you to the retreats, stayed up reading A Course in Miracles. He is the loyal knight who said yes to the journey and has been doing his absolute best ever since — with a script he wrote for himself long before he had the information he has now.
The trouble is the script.
His script says you should have this figured out by now. It says the mark of a real awakening is the absence of triggers. It says the old junk surfacing is evidence you are doing something wrong, or that something is wrong with you, or that you have regressed. It says the divine self you have felt should be available on demand, the way a well-trained skill is available on demand, and if she is not, you have failed to practice correctly.
He is running this script with the best intentions. He has been using it to try to get you home. What he cannot see is that the script itself is what is keeping the Wise One from coming through.
Here is the mechanic. When the old junk surfaces — a memory, an emotion, a charge, a story you had decided you were done with — the Script of Creation is sending it up because it is finally ready to clear. That surfacing is not a regression. It is completion. It is the deepest layer of the work.
But the script reads the surfacing as failure. I should not still have this. I should have worked through this already. And the moment that reading fires, something in the body braces. The heart closes a little. The energy that was finally, mercifully rising to be felt and released gets pushed back down — by the very part of him that was trying to do the work right.
That is why knowing what to do does not translate into doing it. The knowing is upstairs. The script fires before the knowing can get to the body. He is screaming too loudly for the Wise One to get through. And he is screaming — in noble service — the phrase that keeps the scream going: this should not be happening.
The script says: this should not still be happening. I should be past this by now. If the old junk is coming up, something is wrong.
The Script of CreationThe living intelligence running the universe. is running something else entirely: the old junk is coming up because it is finally ready to move. The surfacing is not the setback. It is the clearing. The body is offering — in real time, in the only form the work actually accepts — exactly what needs to be released. And the only thing the clearing requires is an open heart to move through.
The trigger is not a concept asking to be understood. It is energy — real, physical, in the body — asking to be felt and moved. No amount of mental analysis will do what only the body can do. And the channel for that movement is the open heart.
But when the "should" fires, the heart closes a little. Not dramatically. Just enough. The armor goes up in the exact spot the energy was trying to rise through. The charge has nowhere to go. It stays stuck in the nervous system, fires the old loop, and the reader concludes — again — that the work is not working.
The work is working. The script is just louder than the work.
That is why the divine self you have felt many times will not come on command. Not because she is not there. Because he is screaming too loudly for her to get through. No time for the Wise One while the script is running — and the script, in noble sincerity, keeps running because the script thinks it is the work.
The KarmariculumYour soul's custom lesson plan. sends the triggers it sends because those are the exact triggers that will produce enough pressure for the script to finally, exhaustedly, go quiet — and the Wise OneYour higher self. Already home., who has been waiting patiently the whole time, finally has room to move.
She is not outside you. She is you, at the level where you have always been home. And she has been waiting for the moment Sir Ego's script runs out of breath.
I was spiritual before I was sober.
I had read the books. Attended the workshops. Could explain the mechanism with extraordinary clarity to other people going through their own version of my situation. I understood it perfectly — in my mind.
And then I would walk into a courtroom and look exactly like the unhinged woman he painted me to be. The charge would rise. The case would open. Every receipt, every piece of evidence, every airtight rebuttal would fire at full voltage. I could watch myself do it. I could narrate it while it was happening. And still the pattern would complete itself, every time.
What I could not see from inside it was the one word my script was running on repeat underneath everything else. Should. I should have this worked through. I should not still be destroyed by seeing him at a hearing. I should have this figured out by now — I have read the books, done the workshops, understood the framework. If the old stuff would just stop surfacing, I would be fine. Perfect, even. Divine, in fact.
Every time the "should" fired, something closed in my chest. The very energy that was finally rising to be cleared got pushed right back down — by the part of me that was trying hardest to do the work correctly.
I was screaming too loudly for the Wise One to get through. And I was screaming the exact sentence that kept the scream going: this should not be happening.
I kept missing it. Until a weekend I did not plan carefully enough let it be missed.
The turning point was a three-day weekend with Colin Tipping, doing Radical Forgiveness work on the relationship I had spent years unable to release.
Day one was the venting. We yelled. We hit pillows with tennis rackets. We let the ego's case out of the cage and swung it around the room until there was nothing left in it. Every grievance, every injustice, every story I had rehearsed for years — out loud, at full volume, with the whole body.
Something happened that had not happened in any of my reading or my workshops. The energy moved. Not analyzed. Not understood. Moved. The charge that had lived in my chest for years finally had somewhere to go, because nobody was running a "should" over top of it. The work happened in the body, the only place the work was ever going to happen.
That night came the integrative meditation. Deep, long, surgical. Somewhere in that silence, the script that had been running for so long it felt like me simply got quiet. The heart that had been armoring the old charge back down finally got permission to stay open.
Day two was the reframe. We took the same story and ran it through a different lens — not the ego script, but the KarmariculumYour soul's custom lesson plan.. (That word was mine, not Colin's. It arrived later.) What if this relationship was not the thing that happened to me? What if it was the thing my soul had called in, with extraordinary precision, to forge exactly what needed to be forged? What if the man I had cast as the villain was also the most precise instrument my Karmariculum could have selected?
Something in me began to tilt. The reframe did not argue with my script — it just made the script unnecessary. There was nothing for "should" to defend against. The story was no longer a failure or a verdict. It was a curriculum, exactly calibrated, arriving exactly on time.
Day three was the recognition. We stood in front of the group and spoke what had shifted. When it came to me, what came out surprised me. I had spent years believing my children needed my protection from him. What I saw, standing there, was that my children were not the ones who needed protecting. They were the angels who had given me the strength and the commitment and the reason to find my way through the mess. They were not the weight I was carrying. They were the lantern that had been lighting the path all along.
She arose that day. The Wise OneYour higher self. Already home.. Not as a concept. As the one who was now actually in the room when I walked out of it.
The next day I got custody back.
Not because I had done anything outside of myself. I had not called my lawyer. I had not filed a motion. I had done the interior work — three days of embodied forgiveness — and the field responded. He was not reacting to some external spiritual authority. He was responding, at the level of his own higher self whether he had any framework for it or not, to the fact that I had stopped broadcasting the frequency that kept the whole thing running.
That is the mechanism. The Wise One is not an authority outside you. She is you, at the deepest level — and the deepest level of every other soul is where she communicates, frequency to frequency, underneath the ego conversation. When you clear your channel, their channel registers it. Sometimes the response takes years. Sometimes it takes a day.
That weekend became the foundation of everything that came after. The Five Steps crystallized later, but the mechanism was already there: let the ego script out, feel it all the way through, reframe it as the karmariculum it actually is, and let the Wise One rise in the space the old story used to occupy. Recognize. Relax. Release. Receive. Respond.
The practice only works in the fire. And when it works — when you actually embody what you have been reading about for years — what you discover is that the Wise One was never waiting for you to get smarter. She was waiting for you to get exhausted enough to stop running her operation for her.
A quick word about the aspects.
These eight — Light, Peace, Calm, Wisdom, Love, Power, Joy, and Expression — are not qualities to achieve. They are the actual substance of who you are. What your soul is made of, at the level Sir Ego cannot reach.
And here is the clean distinction between Sir Ego and the Wise One:
Sir Ego runs each aspect through its distorted, either/or polarity. The Sword or the Shield. The two exhausted ends of the same rope. Whichever pole his script is running today.
The Wise One embodies the exalted version. The aspect at its unpolarized center — available without effort, radiating without performance. The real thing.
The karmariculum is not random. It forges the specific aspects your soul came here to embody, through the precise pressure required. Nothing extra. Nothing wasted. The full teaching is in the Truth Room →
The awakening path forges specific aspects of your soul with exacting precision. The trigger is the invitation, not the evidence against you. These are the aspects most commonly at work in this terrain.
Awakening can arrive at intensities that exceed what can be held alone. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out. The Five Steps work alongside real human support; they do not replace it.

You did not take the wrong path.
Every book you read, every teacher you sat with, every workshop you attended, every practice you took up and put down and took up again — none of it was wasted. All of it has been Sir Ego doing his absolute best for you, with everything he had, in noble service to a journey he has always meant to see through.
The trouble was never him. The trouble was the one sentence his script has been running in the background all this time — this should not still be happening — that closed the heart every time the energy rose to be cleared. He was not failing you. He was protecting what he thought was worth protecting. He just did not know the script was the thing keeping the Wise One out.
Now you know. And what shifts when you know is not that Sir Ego leaves. It is that he finally hears a different set of orders. Not fix it, defend it, figure it out. Just let this move through. Let her come through. He can do that. He is a good knight. Give him the right orders and watch what he does with them.
The Wise One is not a voice outside you. She is you, at the level where you have always been home. She is not waiting behind a curtain. She is waiting behind a "should."
Drop the should. Open the heart. The rest is already arranged.
Not perfectly. Heroically. That has always been the only way home.
Something in your story has a name. A specific aspect, a specific script, a specific place where the charge is ready to move. The Map Minder can help you find it — in five minutes, in two sentences, for free.
Try the Map Minder ✦If what you need is the practice in your own hands — the Five Steps in full, the exact move for the triggered moment when every teaching you have ever studied suddenly goes silent — Love Heroically is for you.
If what you need is the bigger frame — the mechanism behind the collective moment, the diagnosis that makes sense of why this age feels the way it does, the arc that connects your private awakening to the planetary one — What Happened to Us? is for you.
Neither one requires the other. Both lead home.

Something happened to us. All of us. There is a reason everything feels like it is coming apart. And the reason is more interesting than you think.

"You cannot read this book without being changed for the better by it." — Colin Tipping
Learn More →These questions arrive often from readers who sense something shifting and are wondering what is happening. Each answer comes from the framework's voice — pointing toward the part of you who has been awake the whole time. If any of these open a doorway, the path goes deeper.
You have been noticing things. Reactions landing differently than they used to. Moments of unexpected stillness in the middle of ordinary days. A sense that your old life is becoming smaller, or that something you cannot yet name is becoming larger. Sir Ego has been searching the bookshelves for a frame to put around it, and the searching has produced a question you have been turning over: is this awakening? And how would I know?
The asking itself is the answer. Sir Ego believes he already knows everything that matters; he treats his own perspective as reality and other perspectives as mistaken. Asking the question requires a part of you who is willing to consider that her perspective might be limited, that something larger has been quietly arriving, that what she has assumed about herself may be incomplete. That part of you is the Wise One, and her willingness to ask is the work landing.
Awakening produces specific structural signatures. The loosening of identification with thought. The growing recognition that what you have been calling me is more like a configuration of patterns than a fixed essence. Increased capacity to witness your own reactions rather than be them. The arrival, in unexpected moments, of a stillness that was always available but had been crowded out. These signatures are useful diagnostically. Recognizing them is the work.
The Wise One in you has been here the whole time. She is the part of you who has always been awake, in the sense that consciousness has always been operating in you. What is happening now is the recognition of what was here all along. The shifting you are noticing is Sir Ego's grip loosening enough that her presence becomes felt — as the steady knowing that was there underneath the noise.
Take the asking as confirmation. The work is opening. The path will continue to unfold the way paths unfold — through the quiet recognition, returning more and more often, that the part of you who has been knowing has been here the whole time.
✦ What if the part of you who has been quietly awake the whole time has been making her presence felt the moment Sir Ego paused long enough to notice?
Something opened. Maybe in meditation, maybe on a walk, maybe in the middle of an ordinary afternoon. The boundaries of self softened, or dissolved entirely. Time changed shape. Something that had been there all along became briefly visible, and then the experience ended, and you returned to ordinary consciousness, and you have been wondering what to do with what you saw.
Peak experiences are real. Every contemplative tradition has documented them. They are pointers rather than destinations. The destination of the path is the slow, durable recognition of what the experience pointed at — the Wise One who has been here the whole time, who you briefly felt directly, and who is still here now in ordinary consciousness, available the moment the heart opens enough to feel her.
Sir Ego, after a peak experience, has a strong tendency in two directions. He chases the experience back, replicating the conditions, building practice around the goal of returning to that state. Or he claims the experience as identity — I had this experience, therefore I am awakened, therefore I am ahead of the people around me. Both are predictable patterns of Sir Ego doing what Sir Ego does, this time with spiritual material.
The work after a peak experience is integration. The kitchen is the monastery. The desk is the meditation cushion. Conversations with your family are the practice. What you saw in the peak was real, and the work that follows the peak is the slow building of capacity to feel the Wise One in ordinary moments. Most contemplatives describe the integration phase as harder than the peak experience itself, and structurally more important. The peak was the announcement. The integration is the actual arrival.
The Wise One in you has been here the whole time, including in the peak experience and including now in ordinary consciousness. The peak gave Sir Ego a brief glimpse of what the Wise One has always been holding. The work going forward is the gradual recognition that the seat from which you felt that opening is available right now, in this moment, in this body, regardless of which states arise.
✦ What if the part of you who is still awake from the peak has been quietly here ever since, available the moment Sir Ego stops trying to chase her back?
Please know first that what you are walking is recognized terrain. The contemplative traditions across many cultures have been documenting it for centuries. It has names — the dark night, the desert, the wilderness, the great doubt, the cloud of unknowing. Many souls have walked it before you, and the structural pattern of what is happening is well-mapped, even when it feels from inside as if no one else has ever experienced it this way. Please reach out for support — a therapist who is contemplatively literate, a spiritual director, a teacher who has walked this terrain themselves, a community of others who have. You are meant to be held through this.
Here is what is structurally happening. The frameworks Sir Ego has been using to organize his experience are dissolving. The identities, the certainties, the ways of being that produced functional life, the sense of what matters and why — all of it is becoming porous. The collapse feels existential because Sir Ego is correctly registering that what he has built is dissolving. From his vantage point, this is annihilation. From the soul's vantage point, this is exactly the curriculum's intended unfolding — the framework dissolving so the Wise One can be felt directly, without the scaffolding of the identity Sir Ego had constructed.
This is one of the most fertile phases of the entire path. It feels otherwise from inside. From inside, it feels like failure, depression, loss of faith, loss of purpose, loss of self. The contemplative traditions are unanimous that this phase is structurally part of awakening. Many of the deepest teachers across traditions have spoken of long stretches of dark night in their own paths. The phase is the curriculum doing exactly what it has been designed to do.
The work, gently and with full honoring of how hard this is, is to be present with the dissolution while resting in something underneath it. The Wise One in you has been at peace through every dissolution, the same way she has been at peace through every chapter of your life. She is what is left when the framework's grip loosens. The dark night is the framework dissolving in real time. Her presence becomes more available as the dissolution proceeds.
If you are in active suicidal crisis or are unable to function in your basic life, please reach out for clinical care immediately. 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Real resources exist for the parts of the experience that have become unsustainable. The framework walks alongside clinical support.
The Wise One in you is here. She has been here. She has been holding you through every collapse so far, and she is holding you through this one. The dark night completes, in its own time, when the framework has dissolved enough that her presence becomes more reliably felt than the absent structure. Until then, you are walking what countless souls have walked before you, and you are being held.
✦ What if the part of you who is at peace through the dissolution has been the part of you who has been awake the whole time, finally becoming felt as the framework softens?
You have been on the path for a long time. You have read the books, sat the retreats, worked with the teachers, sustained the practice across years that have asked a great deal of you. And the milestone you have been measuring against has remained elusive.
The frame itself is the work. Closer to awakening is a position Sir Ego is using to measure, and the measurement assumes that awakening is a destination on a path he is walking toward. The framework's posture is structurally different. Awakening is recognition rather than acquisition. The Wise One in you has been awake the whole time. The work has been making her presence increasingly feelable to Sir Ego, who has been doing what egos do — generating activity, measuring progress, comparing to standards.
This means the work has been doing exactly its work, even when no measurable progress has appeared on Sir Ego's instrument panel. The years of practice have been softening the grip in ways that operate underneath the metric. The fact that you can ask the question this calmly, after years that would have undone someone with less practice, is information about what has actually been happening. Sir Ego has been using the wrong instrument.
There is also a real possibility that the practice has been pointed at the wrong layer. Some practices reinforce the seeking pattern itself. I am working toward awakening is a position; the position requires Sir Ego to remain present as the one who is working. The contemplative traditions that have produced the most stable awakening tend to point at recognition rather than acquisition — the awake state is already here; your work is feeling that it is.
The Wise One in you knows what has been happening. She has been steady through every retreat, every meditation, every practice session, every plateau. She has been the destination Sir Ego has been walking toward. From her seat, the years of work have been the curriculum unfolding exactly the way it was meant to, on the timeline the soul agreed to, regardless of what milestones appeared on Sir Ego's measurement.
✦ What if the part of you who has been awake the whole time has been quietly making herself feelable through every year of practice, while Sir Ego was busy measuring against a milestone that was the pointer rather than the destination?
You have been catching it. The moment when you notice that what felt like spiritual depth was Sir Ego claiming the depth as identity. The moment when I am awakened turned out to be I am better than the people around me, this time using spiritual vocabulary. The moment when the humility you thought you were performing turned out to be a more sophisticated form of pride. The catching is happening, and it has been generating its own discouragement, because every time you think you have made it past the trap, the trap shows up in a new costume.
Here is what is structurally happening, and the recognition itself is the work. Sir Ego, given access to spiritual experiences and contemplative vocabulary, has a strong and predictable tendency to claim them as new ego material. I am awakened. I am a teacher. I see what other people cannot see. I am ahead on the path. This is one of the most universal patterns in the entire contemplative landscape, recognized by every tradition that has watched practitioners walk it. The trap is so common that traditions have specific names for it — spiritual materialism, spiritual bypassing, the offering of the path itself as a new identity to clutch.
The relationship with the trap matures over time. Early in the work, the trap goes undetected; Sir Ego claims spiritual identity and the practitioner identifies with the claim. With practice, the catching begins — moments where you notice you have been in the trap, often after the fact, sometimes during. With more practice, the catching becomes faster and the identification with the claim becomes thinner. With still more practice, the trap continues to arise and loses its grip; Sir Ego still puts on spiritual clothes, and you can see him doing it without being him.
The fact that you are catching it is the work landing. The discouragement Sir Ego is generating — I keep falling for the trap; I am behind — is the same script in another costume. The Wise One in you has been awake the whole time without needing to claim it. She is the part of you who is doing the catching. She catches because clear seeing is her natural function.
The litmus test, when you suspect Sir Ego has put on spiritual clothes: does the experience or insight keep your heart open, including toward yourself? An open heart is the Wise One's signature. A closed heart, even one performing humility, is Sir Ego with new vocabulary. Same content, different seat, opposite effects on the heart and on the path.
✦ What if the part of you who has been catching the trap has been the Wise One the whole time, doing exactly what the path has been training her to do?
You have been wondering. Maybe the books are no longer enough. Maybe a community of practitioners would deepen what you have been doing alone. Maybe there is a teacher whose lineage and presence would give you something the page cannot provide. Sir Ego has been browsing — comparing schools, reading reviews, noticing which retreats are filling, wondering whether the next teacher might be the one who finally takes you over the threshold.
The Wise One in you knows whether you need a teacher and which one is yours for this season. Sir Ego goes teacher-shopping when he hits a hard patch. He treats teachers the way he treats everything else — as resources to acquire, as authorities to lean on, as solutions to the discomfort of not yet knowing. The Wise One recognizes when the next teaching is being offered, often in unexpected forms — a book that almost jumps off the shelf as you walk past, a sentence in a podcast that lands as if it were addressed to you specifically, a conversation with a stranger that delivers exactly what you needed to hear, a teacher whose work you encounter at the moment your readiness has matured. The recognition is hers. The work is keeping the heart open enough that she can deliver it.
Teachers can be useful, and discernment is required. The Wise One in you is the actual teacher whose recognition is being trained. External teachers serve when they point inward. The discernment about which teachers serve in this way is one of the capacities the work develops over time.
There is also a practical teaching for moments when the work seems stuck. When the release step is not moving — when you have recognized, relaxed, and the energy or belief is still gripped — return to the teachings already in your life. The book that has spoken to you. The teacher whose voice has landed. The tradition whose practices have produced real shifts. The karmariculum has placed those teachings in your life for exactly this kind of moment. Open the book. Let the teacher speak. The teaching will arrive.
The Wise One in you has been recognizing teachers and teachings the whole time. She has known when the next stepping stone was being offered, often before Sir Ego could see what was happening. As you spend time with her, the recognition becomes more reliable, and the teacher-shopping becomes less compelling, because you have begun to trust that what is yours will arrive.
✦ What if the part of you who recognizes the next teaching when it arrives has been guiding you toward it the whole time, while Sir Ego was busy browsing?
The relationships have been changing. Conversations that used to land are hitting differently. People you have loved for years seem to be operating from inside a frame you can suddenly see from outside. You have been wondering whether to share what you have been seeing, and the few times you have tried, the sharing has produced confusion, distance, or active resistance. Sir Ego has been asking whether you should leave, whether you should keep trying to bring them along, or whether you are supposed to wait for them to catch up.
The path is internal. Your awakening is yours. The recognition that produces real shift in another person happens at a layer language struggles to reach. People around you will arrive, or not arrive, on timelines their own souls have arranged, and your role in their arrival is rarely what you imagine it to be. Often the most useful thing you can offer them is your presence — the steady frequency of your own continued work, available without demand, without instruction, without the implicit pressure that they should be where you are.
Trying to drag people through awakening tends to backfire. The drag generates pressure that the other person's nervous system reads as threat, and the resistance increases. Sometimes the drag is overt — explanations, books offered, conversations attempted. Sometimes the drag is subtle — the implicit standard against which their ordinary functioning is being measured, the secret hope that they will catch up, the disappointment that leaks through when they fail to. Their nervous systems read the subtle drag too. The most loving thing you can do for the people in your life is to keep doing your work and allow them to walk their paths.
Some relationships transform through sustained awakening. Some deepen, often in surprising ways. Some pause and resume in different form. Some end. The karmariculum has been arranging this. The relationships that reorganize through your awakening were doing so anyway; the work has accelerated what was already underway.
The Wise One in you has been with the relationships through every chapter, holding the love at a layer that has nothing to do with whether the other person is currently inhabiting the same recognition you are. From her seat, the people in your life are loved exactly as they are, walking exactly the curricula their souls came in to walk, and the difference between your work and theirs is information about timing rather than verdict. Love them where they are. The path will reorganize what wants reorganizing, on its own pace.
✦ What if the part of you who loves them where they are has been holding the relationships at a layer the awakening has only deepened?
The experiences have been showing up. The synchronicity that was too specific to be coincidence. The moment you knew the call was coming before the phone rang. The energy you felt in a room that was confirmed by what someone said an hour later. The sense that someone was about to enter your life before they did. Sir Ego has been alarmed by these moments because they fit none of his categories.
Non-ordinary experience is part of awakening territory for many seekers. The apparatus through which consciousness operates has been registering layers of reality that the consensus framework treats as nonexistent, and as the apparatus's grip on the consensus framework softens, more of these layers become accessible. Many awakening practitioners pass through phases of these experiences, and the contemplative traditions have been documenting them for centuries — siddhis in yoga, the gifts of the spirit in Christian mysticism, the perception openings described in Buddhist texts. They are part of the territory.
The framework's posture is the same as for everything else in awakening work. Transcend the fear, and let the Wise One tell you what the experience is about. Sir Ego has no map for what is happening. The Wise One has had access to these layers all along; she is at home in them. Opening the heart toward the experience allows her to deliver the teaching of the moment. Often the teaching is some version of yes, this is real; here is what it is for; here is what you do with it, which is usually nothing in particular, just continued practice and continued openness.
Discernment about how much weight to give the phenomena is part of the work. Sir Ego, given non-ordinary experience, has a strong tendency to organize identity around it. I am psychic. I am sensitive in ways others are not. I have access to dimensions most people do not perceive. These claims are sometimes accurate and tend to be destabilizing when held as identity. The Wise One in you who is having the experiences uses the information they provide and continues with the work.
If the experiences are producing severe distress, distorted thinking, or impaired functioning, please seek clinical evaluation alongside the contemplative work. Some non-ordinary experience is awakening territory; some is information about something the body or mind needs medical attention for; some is a hybrid. A practitioner who is both clinically trained and contemplatively literate can help you sort the layers. The framework walks alongside clinical care.
✦ What if the part of you who has been at peace with the experiences has been the Wise One the whole time, ready to deliver the teaching of each one when the heart opens enough to receive it?
It has been happening for months. You walk into rooms and immediately read the dynamics. You watch the news and see the egoic patterns running. You listen to your colleagues and see the scripts they are operating from. The clear seeing feels like a gift the work has finally delivered, and you have started to wonder whether your role now involves naming what you see, helping others recognize their own patterns, becoming a kind of teacher by virtue of what has become visible to you.
Here is the most useful distinction the framework can offer in this terrain. Discernment is the seeing of what is. The recognition that this is happening, this person is operating from this script, this dynamic has these features. Discernment is the Wise One's natural function and the work has been training it. Judgment is a second step, structurally different from discernment, that Sir Ego skips into automatically. This is wrong. They should be different. This shouldn't be happening. Judgment closes the heart, ends the curiosity, locks the seer into a position.
The litmus test is the heart. Clear seeing that arrives from the Wise One's seat keeps the heart open. You see the script the other person is running, you see the wound underneath the script, you see the soul behind the wound walking some curriculum its own. The seeing produces compassion, even when it includes the recognition that distance is appropriate. Clear seeing that arrives from Sir Ego's seat closes the heart. The other person becomes wrong, evil, beneath you, an obstacle, evidence of how far you have come. Same content. Different seat. Opposite effects on the heart, and opposite effects on the path.
Sir Ego, given access to the clear seeing the work has trained, has a strong tendency to convert it into judgment. He recognizes the patterns in others and runs the position that he has graduated past them. This is one of the most predictable phases of awakening work. The seeing is real. The judgment is the trap. Many awakening practitioners spend years in this phase before catching it, often after the judgment has cost them relationships and produced isolation that confirms Sir Ego's narrative that he has outgrown ordinary people.
The Wise One in you can see clearly with the heart open. Her clear seeing is in service of the love. She knows the difference between this person is operating from a wound and a verdict on the soul. The first holds the soul. The second discards it. The training of the path is the gradual maturation of the capacity to discern with the heart open, and the maturation is slow. The work is the recognition itself, repeated as often as the trap arises.
✦ What if the part of you who can see clearly with the heart open has been doing exactly the work the path has been training, regardless of whether Sir Ego has tried to take credit for the seeing?
You have been opening, and the opening has been producing flooding. Old feelings you had not felt in decades. New feelings the apparatus is registering for the first time. The pain of others landing in your body in ways it did before with less intensity. The intensity of ordinary moments — sunlight, music, conversations — becoming nearly unmanageable. Sir Ego has been wondering what is happening, because the bandwidth he had has been exceeded.
Opening produces flooding before it produces stability. This is structurally true and is rarely well-explained in the contemplative literature. The apparatus that has been gradually softening through your practice was holding more material than you realized, and the softening allows that material to surface. At the same time, the apparatus has been becoming more sensitive — registering layers of input that were always present and that Sir Ego had been filtering out. Both phenomena combine in the early-to-middle phases of awakening to produce what feels like nervous-system overwhelm. The body is doing real work, and the work is happening on a timeline the body sets.
Please use whatever practical resources are helping. A therapist who is contemplatively literate. A somatic practitioner — somatic experiencing, body-centered therapy, trauma-informed bodywork. Clinical care if the overwhelm has crossed into clinical territory. Medication, where appropriate, walks alongside the contemplative work; using it is part of how some souls walk this terrain. The body's capacity to hold what is now arriving has to be built, and the building requires support.
The peace the contemplative traditions have promised is real, and it arrives later than most practitioners expect. The early-to-middle phases of the work are often more turbulent than the pre-practice life because the apparatus is feeling what it had been suppressing. Stability comes through integration; the way through is through. The peace that arrives on the other side is the capacity to feel everything with steadiness underneath. A bigger container for the same range.
The Wise One in you has been at peace through the flooding, the same way she has been at peace through everything else. She is what is steady underneath the overwhelm. As you spend time with her — gently, in small flashes, with the support of practitioners who can hold space — Sir Ego's relationship with the flooding shifts. The feelings continue to arise, and the relationship to them changes.
✦ What if the part of you who is at peace through the flooding has been here the whole time, available the moment Sir Ego has space to feel her?
You have had the experience, or several. Or you have been steady for a while in a way you had not been before, and now you are wondering whether the steadiness is durable. Sir Ego has been gripping the question — is this mine to keep? Could it leave? What would I do if it did? The gripping has been producing its own activation.
Peak experiences have their own rhythm. They open, they crest, they integrate. Every contemplative tradition agrees on this. The destination of the path is the slow, durable building of capacity to recognize what the peak experiences pointed at, in ordinary moments, in ordinary consciousness, regardless of which states are arising.
The Wise One in you has been awake the whole time. She was awake before the peak experience, she was awake during it, she has been awake ever since. The peak gave Sir Ego a brief glimpse of what she has always been holding. The work going forward is the gradual recognition that the seat from which you felt the peak is available right now.
The frame of the question itself is part of the work. Can I keep it assumes there is something to keep. The Wise One has been here, and she will continue to be here. The recognition deepens in cycles, with periods of clearer feeling and periods where she seems further away. Both are part of the same arc. The further-away periods are phases the curriculum has arranged. The clearer-feeling periods are recognition landing more directly. The work is continuing through both.
Sir Ego's gripping of the question is information. Wherever Sir Ego is gripping, there is a position he has built that the work is asking him to release. The relationship to the Wise One becomes more durable as the gripping softens, because she is here, available, and the gripping is what makes her seem occasionally absent.
✦ What if the part of you who has been awake the whole time has been here through every state and every phase, with nothing required to be kept because she has been the steady ground underneath them all?
The career that used to drive you. The hobbies that used to delight you. The social events you used to anticipate. The goals you used to pursue. One by one, they have been losing their grip. Some you can no longer make yourself want; others you do them mechanically with the felt sense that they no longer mean what they used to. Sir Ego has been wondering what is happening, whether you are depressed, whether the awakening has stripped you of the things that made life worth living.
Both can be operating at once, and the framework holds both honestly. Awakening often produces a phase of value-system reorganization. The pursuits that were operating from Sir Ego's identity-construction project — careers built to prove worth, hobbies built to fill emptiness, goals built to outrun some unexamined fear — lose their grip when the underlying fear releases. The releasing produces real disinvestment from those pursuits. This is the framework's old structure dissolving, structurally part of the work.
Depression is also real. The clinical pattern has its own architecture, and it can co-occur with awakening, sometimes triggered by it, sometimes independent of it. Depression deserves clinical attention. The disinvestment-of-awakening tends to coexist with continued engagement in life; the previous activities have lost grip, and new sources of meaning are surfacing or already evident. Depression tends to flatten everything, including the meaning-making capacity itself, and produces the felt sense that meaning may never arrive again. The two patterns can be distinguished by a clinically literate observer, often by the practitioner herself with practice, sometimes only by working with a therapist who can sort the layers.
Please get evaluated by someone trained to make this distinction if the disinvestment is producing significant suffering, impaired functioning, or sustained inability to engage with your basic life. The framework walks alongside clinical care. If clinical depression is part of what is happening, treating it allows the awakening to continue with the bandwidth that severe untreated depression would otherwise occupy.
The Wise One in you knows what is operating. She has been steady through the disinvestment — letting go of the pursuits Sir Ego had been building identity around, holding open the space for what the soul actually came in to do. The hollowing-out phase is part of the curriculum, and the new shape of your life often takes time to arrive after the old shape has dissolved. Some practitioners describe years between the disinvestment phase and the clear arrival of the next configuration. Both phases are real. The Wise One has been with you through both.
✦ What if the part of you who has been steady through the disinvestment has been holding the space for what comes next, with the patience the soul's timing requires?
You have been doing the inner work. And you also have a job, a relationship, children who need rides to school, a mortgage that has to be paid, a household that requires running. The contemplative materials you have been reading often describe practitioners who have left their lives to do the work — gone to retreat centers, joined monasteries, simplified their circumstances dramatically. You have been wondering how your continued engagement with ordinary responsibilities fits into the picture.
Ordinary life is the field of practice. The kitchen is the monastery. The desk is the meditation cushion. Conversations with your kids are the actual practice. The work the path is training is precisely the capacity to remain in the Wise One's seat through the activations of daily existence. A practitioner who can find peace at the kitchen sink at 6 PM with everyone needing something has developed the durable seat the work is meant to produce.
Retreats serve the path. The deep silence allows recognition to land that the noise of ordinary life can crowd out. The retreat is the laboratory; ordinary life is the application. Practitioners who do retreats and then return to integrate what they received in their actual lives have walked the work in the way the work was designed to be walked.
The integration challenges are real. The disconnect between contemplative reading and the moment your toddler is throwing food. The difficulty of remaining in the Wise One's seat through a difficult work meeting. The tension between long meditation practices and the time-budget of household responsibilities. Each of these is, structurally, the curriculum delivering exactly the conditions in which awakening becomes durable.
Many of the deepest practitioners across traditions have walked the path while sustaining ordinary lives. They have raised children, held jobs, paid mortgages, navigated marriages, taken care of aging parents. The depth of their realization grew through these responsibilities. Your work is the work where you actually live, which is the only place the work can actually be walked.
The Wise One in you has been with you in the kitchen, the office, the school pickup, the bedroom argument with your partner, the late-night accounting. She has been at peace through every ordinary moment. The recognition of her seat in those moments is the durable awakening the path has been training. From her seat, the integration is the work itself, happening in the place the work was always meant to happen.
✦ What if the part of you who has been at peace in the ordinary has been the awakening you were looking for, in the only place it could ever really land?
You have a tradition. Maybe you have been a serious practitioner for years; maybe you have been a casual participant; maybe you arrived at this framework from somewhere else and have been wondering how the somewhere else fits. Sir Ego has been doing what Sir Ego does — comparing schools, ranking traditions, looking for the right one, suspecting that committing fully to one would resolve the discomfort of having multiple teachers in his life.
The framework's relationship with traditions is friendly-cousin. Every tradition that has produced real awakening across centuries is holding wisdom the framework draws from. Buddhism, Christianity, yoga, Sufism, Taoism, the various mystical traditions of every faith, contemporary movements like the Course in Miracles or the witness practice associated with Untethered Soul — each holds a piece of what the soul came in to learn, and many practitioners benefit deeply from going deep in one tradition. The framework's contribution is structural — the Five Steps, the Eight Aspects, the diagnostic taxonomy of where readers get stuck on the path — and the structure is meant to be useful alongside whatever tradition is already speaking to you.
The framework offers infrastructure that traditions tend to leave implicit — the practical question of what to do when the release step is not moving, the diagnostic apparatus for figuring out where you are stuck, the eight-aspect map for recognizing which divine quality is currently being distorted into ego. These are useful additions to almost any contemplative practice. They work alongside tools you may already be using.
There is a practical teaching here. When the work seems stuck — when the release step is not moving — return to the teachings already in your life. Open the book that has spoken to you. Let the teacher whose voice you trust speak again. Practice the discipline that has been producing real shifts. The karmariculum has placed those teachings in your life for exactly this kind of moment, and returning to them is part of the work. ACIM, Untethered Soul, Buddhist meditation, Christian contemplative prayer, yoga practice, Radical Forgiveness, whichever resource has been speaking to you — open it when release is stuck. The teaching that arrives will often be exactly what was needed. Many practitioners find their existing tradition deepens when the framework's structural language is added to it.
The Wise One in you knows which tradition is yours for this season, and what is yours for it requires. She has been at peace with whatever configuration of teachings has been operating in your life, recognizing that traditions are tools the karmariculum has provided. From her seat, the question of which tradition is right loses its grip, because the recognition the path is producing is the same recognition regardless of which tradition has been training the practitioner to feel it.
✦ What if the part of you who recognizes what is yours has been guiding you toward the right teachings, in the right combinations, the whole time?
